i should hope that my 3.2 is not considered as highly as someone with a 3.2 in materials science...

Assuming that hard sciences or engineering majors are more difficult than history or english majors is questionable. Many people think that students who did okay in engineering would have excelled at a liberal arts major. That is not always true. Plenty of engineering folks are horrible writers and do not do very well in the writing intensive courses that many soft majors require. Likewise, there are plenty of social science majors who are terrible at math.
Anyways, don't worry so much about comparing GPAs from different majors. Just major in something that interests you and try to focus on coursework that hones research, analytical, and written/oral communication skills.
