In Reply To: Fred, you have a very good chance at the schools you mentioned. Even with the upswing in admissions, our entering class at Columbia came in with median scores of 3.69/170. You sound like you're right there. Of course, they're expected to go up again this year. By the way, unless you're really short of money, you really should apply to HYS, you'll never know unless you do, and you can always reject them later if you're admitted. People sometimes change their minds between now and June. I'd hate to see you regret not going to the TOP 3 simply because you didn't try. Good Luck
Message: Thanks for the support, stepson. I'll keep my fingers crossed. I agree with you that it's (almost) always worth applying to the top 3 if you're anywhere near the numbers, which I am. But the way I look at it, if I somehow miraculously got into Yale, I would almost certainly get into Columbia. And I'd rather go to Columbia than Yale (gasp!), mainly because my significant other and I will be moving together and she has little reason to move to New Haven (who does?) and plenty of reasons to move to New York. So really what's the point in applying to Yale if I know I don't want to got there? The same holds for Stanford. Anyway, thanks again for the positive words. It's a sad testimony on the whole process that my 98th percentile score felt like a disappointment. I guess "perspective" has already been thrown out the window, only to get further distorted in the future.
