In Reply To: Sam, I'm a 1L struggling my way at a top10 school. 1. What options would you recommend for me next summer? 2. Are associate positions available for 1L summer? 3. How does one land a judicial externship? What is considered "gravy" here? 4. Do I need to know what I want to get into. B/c I don't!
Message: I'm not Sam, but I am a 2L at a top ten school. Associate positions are available for 1Ls, but nearly all the 2Ls I know who worked for law firms last summer had (1) science or tech PhDs or (2) connections to the firms they worked at (e.g., family). I don't know of anyone who worked for a firm last summer who did not fit into one of those two categories, but of course that doesn't mean such people don't exist. I did an externship with a federal district judge last summer. I sent out my applications in mid-December and had a spot by end of the year. I sent around 40 applications to judges in the area where I wanted to work. Include a cover letter (emphasize any research and writing skills in your background, because that's basically all you do as an extern), resume, and writing sample. If you have grades by the time you apply, send your transcript too. You don't need to know what you want to get into.
