Can someone help me understand part of the reading comprehension passage about burning trees: the last paragraph about the effects of burning in Nicaragua, Mexico, and Guatamala. Understanding of this part was tested in two questions. In one, the answer choices went something like: A) th US Southwest B) Nicaragua at high altitude C) the Mexican low lands D) Mexico at high altitude etc... and the answer choices for the other confusing question were something like: A) homogeneus mixed hardwoods B) heterogeneus pines C) heterogeneus tropical trees etc... anyway, any thoughts would be helpful, that last paragraph of the passage was lost on me, but i wanted some peace of mind. |

the princeton review message board has had a pretty extensive post-lsat discussion... i'd try there.
but here goes: The last paragraph talked about how nicaraguan pine forests were not naturally occuring in the low elevation areas of nicaragua... low elevation areas were mixed hardwoods until burned by native americans (and also by implication, i think, later european immigrants)
It also stated that when populations abandoned an area and thus stopped burning the low elevations, mixed hardwoods moved back in so that the forest was no longer homogenous.
there was a question about the term "succession", which i believe was pines to mixed hardwood, 2 questions where i believe the answer was low elevation in a row: first one was nicaraguan low elevation. The 2nd question you refer to i think was a question about what demonstrated burning by native americans... or something like that, and i believe it was homogenous pines
anyway, check out princeton review message board
