In Reply To: Currently I am a business undergrad student (sophomore), majoring in Marketing and double minoring in Psychology and Finance, lately I've become interested in Corporate or Commercial Law. I'm not so familiar with their difference or specialization though, however I would like to know how can I incorporate all these carrers into law?? I have no idea how does marketing can relate to law, or what kind of skills are needed in order to be successful in law school. I know that most lawyers debate, use deductive reasoning and write/research alot in their cases, but on the other hand marketing majors are mostly on the creative side, may be with a little less structure in their thinking. I'm mostly into the arts, for instance advertising, may be that is a complete 360 degree turn but before I decide for law I would like to know if I'm considering the right option or may be even consider graduate school instead. Please anybody I need some feedback!! Thanks a lot ...
Message: Firms today are businesses who need to gain clients, recruit the best law grads, etc. Therefore, a Marketing background is very very valuable to Corporate firms. I met with a senior partner from one of the largest firms in my market last week, at a career panel at my law school, and he praised marketing extensively(a 1L asked him the same question you are asking now). You would be very valuable in selling the firm's services to new clients. Your business background is great, don't go wasting your time with useless courses to try to "diversify." Keep up your econ (as a business major, I had to take an advanced Micro course, as well as Business Economics, which are very valuable to me in my first year of law). Also, the writing is important. Even working for big name business and accounting firms, my writing (which used to be viewed as excellent) is now getting shot to hell from my Research & Writing prof. Of course, it's all about what the specific professor wants. But still, the writing is the most important aspect of first year to me so far, so take advantage of your courses such as "Fundamentals of Business Communication" or "Written Professional Communication," courses I took as a business undergrad. Sorry this is disorganized, but the point is that your major will be very beneficial and well-received.
