I talk too much. Here's the rest of what I wrote (wouldn't fit - who knew there was a word limit until I came along?):
For the best info. on apartments in Chicago, go to the Chicago Reader website (sort of like Chicago's version of the Village Voice): www.chireader.com. (Actually, you should check out the Chicago Reader regardless of what your housing situation is. It has all the movie, theater, music, club, bar, etc. listings for the whole area. Print version comes out weekly on Wed. night/Thurs. - free copies all over, usually in convenience stores, bars, restaurants, etc. It's the best guide to Chicago social life that there is. But I digress...) Or consider using an apartment search service, like "Apartment People" on Broadway near Belmont. Because of the excess supply of housing around here, these apt. search service people don't charge you for their assistance (unlike, say, NYC). They charge a commission to the landlords who advertise with them, and they have a lot of listings. I used Apt. People when I first moved here, found my second apartment through the Reader ads, and the third one when I noticed a sign in a window while walking down a shady sidestreet of greystones near Wrigley Field.
Last, but not least. Don't fear the El as a mode of transportation in the future. I happen to love it (so much better, cleaner, and less crowded than NYC's subway system or Boston's T).

I've spent many weeks in Chitown, and everything Janet sez is true -- city that works and all that. Made many friends there and was always treated with kindness.
And congrats on Harvard. With your background at EEOC, I'm sure you'll be much sought-after during OCI.
