In Reply To: How do law schools assess transfer applications differently than regular ones? They take first year grades into consideration, but how much weight do these grades bear on the final decision? Is it competition for transfer admission more or less competitive? If people who have successfully transferred could provide specific examples (i.e. LSAT score and undergraduate and first year GPA), including whatever other reasons they believe they may have been admitted and noting their original school with the school they transferred to, that would help a great deal.
Message: I haven't transferred but I will be applying to transfer this summer. According to my research, first year grades are the only consideration. If there was a tie they might look at LSAT score or where you went to undergrad but overall it's all class rank from 1st year and rank of the school you attend. BTW, you'll also need good recs so kiss up to your profs. The transfer process is fairly competitive. Supposedly schools like Northwestern and Chicago get about 80 apps and accept around 20 students. And keep in mind that no one will apply to Chicago unless they have really good grades. Speaking as someone planning to try to transfer, let me just say that you shouldn't even be thinking about it at this point (I'm assuming you will be a 1L next fall). Hardly anyone transfers. And law school grades are a lot more arbitrary than you imagine. Everyone starts 1L thinking they're going to work their butt off and be top 10% but only 10% make it. And my observation is that some people work really really hard but are only average. Plus transferring is a real pain. If you do well enough to transfer your school will throw money at you. Plus you'll be a shoo in for summer associateship. So most students who do well enough to transfer have plenty of reasons to stay where they are.
