I am currently trying to decide between SMU, Texas and Duke and would appreciate some input on the decision. The situation as I see it is:
SMU
* Financial - Best of the 3. As a result of scholarship aid, I should be able to get out debt-free.
* Reputation - #49 USNWR. Well respected in the Dallas area. Relatively unknown nationally. Has taken some hits on reputation due to poor bar passage rates in recent years.
* School - Good size (approx 200 1L). Not as selective as UT or Duke.
* Employment prospects - Very good in Dallas. Good in Texas. Questionable for rest of US.
Texas
* Financial - Reasonable. As an in-state resident, I should be able to get out with around $40K in debt.
* Reputation - #15 USNWR. Very well respected in Texas and nationally, but not quite as high as Duke in the latter.
* School - Very big (approx 500 1L). Very bureaucratic. Possibly the most competitive of the 3(?). Good teaching faculty. Selective.
* Employment prospects - Very good in Texas and good rest of nation.
Duke
* Financial - Expensive. I am looking at $100K+ in debt.
* Reputation - #12 USNWR. Very well respected nationally.
* School - Similar to SMU in size (200+ 1L). Good teaching faculty. Very selective.
* Employment prospects - Very good nationally.
I will be 32 when I get out of law school, so the prospect of a large debt load is daunting to me. In all likelihood, I will end up working in Texas. I would like to have the ability to land a clerkship (preferably federal) out of school should I desire that. I would like to be able to clerk both summers (realistically, I know this will be difficult). I am also interested in teaching law later in life (20+ years down the road).
Thank you for any input you can provide. |
