In Reply To: I'm a junior majoring in finance and marketing at Indiana Universities Kelley School of Business. I was pretty satisfied w/ the idea of a career in the business world (stockbroker, CFP, entrepreneur) and going after an MBA. After taking some courses in socilogy/psych, philosphy, and bus-law recently... I haven't been as sure. I really enjoyed the challenges I faced in those classes, using objective thought and such. The more I read and talk w/ my prof's about pursuing law, the more interested I become. More than likely I'll work in the business sector for a few years, I'm not in any rush. I guess my questions are... Was law school always an interest for many of you, or something that developed w/ time? How did many of you decide law was something you wanted to pursue, rather than say, your undergrad major/degree? I was wondering what different motivations everyone here had/has in your decisions to pursue a career in law or attend law school? My last questions relate to what schools I have a realistic chance of attending? From what I've read, state schools are looked down upon. Why is that? Does the fact that Kelley is a top 10 undergrad b-school help? I'm double major w/ a 3.6 GPA, set to graduate on time (4yrs), will that carry any weight? Should I take the LSATs while I'm still in school or right after I graduate, while things are still fresh, or does it matter at all? Assuming I graduate w/ the same GPA, do fairly well/average (I'm not sure what average equates to, I've heard there's no real way to determine how well you'll do) on the LSATs, what law schools are realistic? Will coming from a state school be that much of a hindrance, that I shouldn't seriously consider applying to top schools? Any answers, suggestions, responses, are appreciated. Thanks, Ryan
Message: You should be fine, a 3.6 GPA from any school is really good. You may hear differently, but law schools DO NOT take into consideration where you went undergrad, nor the difficulty of the program that you were in. I went to Michigan Undergrad, and I double majored in Engineering and History, and Engineering is very difficult, and it knocked my GPA down A LOT. I had a 3.2 GPA when I graduated. I applies to the same law schools as people from other schools who were history majors, or communications majors, we had the same LSAT scores, and they got in, and I didn't. They had 3.6 GPAs, I had a 3.2. Perhaps if I took "History of Roman Orgies" I would have had a 3.6, but I didn't. You should be fine, so long as you get a good LSAT score.
