In Reply To: The "initial cut" at law school admissions is a formula based on GPA and LSAT. Most schools weight the LSAT much heavier than GPA. Your GPA is below the 25th percentile normal admit for the top 15 schools. However, if you get a high LSAT, then you're going to be very competitive anyway. What is a "high" LSAT in this context? I suggest that you look at the 75th percentile admit LSATs for schools in the usnews.com ranks 7 through 15. These LSAT scores are in the high 160s or just over 170. If you get a very high 160s score, or crack 170, then I'd say you have a shot at a top 15. I doubt that top 5 is in the cards for you, but I know that others have made high admissions with astronomically high LSATs. I hope you'll pardon a digression to a related topic. If your goal is to do patent work, I do not think that a top 10 school is as important to your job search as it will be for other grads (assuming that the tech downturn is not long-lasting). For you, a GWU or a BU or heck, even Houston or Franklin Pierce's specialized program(s) in IP (a rare instance in which specialization makes "sense" to me) should be enough credential, coupled with decent grades, to give you a run at a patent career.
Message: Thank you for the advice, it gives me an idea on what to shoot for on the LSAT. However, I'm not necesarily considering IP or patent law only, but also corporate law. In my capacity as engr. at my former company, I was able to work with the corporate lawyers from time to time and enjoyed it. Law has always been of interest to me as well. Please feel free to comment on this, as I'll take all the help I can get. Thanks
