In Reply To: Is Hamline a recognized school outside of Minnesota? Specifically in Chicago, Florida or even Canada? What are the career prospects for one graduating this May?? What would be a typical starting salary for a Hamline graduate in MN?
Message: Hamline is the "other" law school in MN. It has tuition north of 18K a year, and yet a private median income of roughly 41K. Further, its website recites that the private firm placement of a 1996 class was only roughly 37% private firm and 15% judicial clerkship (usually a stepping stone to private firm), which, if representative, suggests that a relatively large % of folks got the public or continued to work in non-legal jobs (not at all uncommon in schools with night programs, where many workers are government or corporate workers for whom the JD is a nice advancement resume item). A run in martindale.com for Florida discloses 37 Hamline grads working there--my quick glance suggested that some are in house insurance defenders for an insurer, some are small firm lawyers. The Hamline website suggests that the 3,000 Hamline grads are dispersed among 49 states. Illinois also showed several dozen Hamline graduates. Hamline is not hard to get into. It has managed to do some outside MN placement. Its median salaries are quite low in relation to its tuition, but my assumption is that much of MN is not that expensive to live in. If I wanted to practice in FL, I'd go to one of the several lesser schools there that are as easy to get in as Hamline. I see nothing particularly wrong with Hamline, but it strikes me that if one could go to a cheaper public school, one might have an easier time of things. Hopefully, someone who knows the campus a bit better can pipe in. Of course, at Hamline, as at virtually any accredited law school, if you get out in the top 10 percent of your class, you'll make close to top MN dollar. But when you are a prospective student, you don't go into it assuming high grades.
