In Reply To: One of philosophy professor sent me a copy of the letter of recommendation yesterday. I am not sure whether this letter is strong. I need your second-opinion. He said, X frequently contributed to class discussion.blah blah blah... X has a interesting views on the Mill's(Philsopher) philosophical theory. Then he said..., X will continue to be a helpful contributor to clss discussion.
Message: but okay -- I guess I wouldn't say that it is "strong". To me, strong means there are superlatives somewhere along the way -- or some kind of quantification of your impact in class (e.g. "in a class of 40 undergraduate students, Mr. X was among the best / the best" or, better yet, "Mr. X is one of the best students I have ever encountered"). It helps that he mentioned something specific (i.e. your take on J.S. Mill) so there was something memorable about you and it's not like he pulled up someone else's LoR and did a search and replace with your name... It's not "weak", but it's not that impressive. It definitely won't put you over the top if you are on the borderline between an acceptance and waitlist/rejection - but it won't hurt you if you are in anyway on your other merits...
