In Reply To: Although it was a long time ago, I remember scoring in the high-170s in the practice tests. I did not score in the high-170s on the real thing. I think you will find that most people experience something similar, although maybe not as big of a dropoff as you experienced. There is no "practice" for the stress of taking the actual test. You might want to think about whether this contributed to the difference in scores. Of course, a 164 is right on the margins as far a scores for top schools is concerned. I don't know what I would do in your position.
Message: Every year, the message boards leading up to LSAT time state "I've been averaging 172 on my practice tests, should I put down the deposit on my apartment in New Haven". Every year, in the weeks after the LSAT, the boards are full of "I had a COLD that day, and I scored 159"!. I have a lot of sympathy with the drama of scoring high on practice tests, and then making only above average on the actual day. As I progress in law, I cannot believe that LSAT is such a factor. But the reality is that practice tests are not a good indicator of ultimate score (funny how you rarely see posts about what must also be true: "I was tanking the LSAT practice tests but I just got a 170"). I don't know why scores drop off, but I agree with you that they do drop off.
