In Reply To: I'm comtemplating thinking about considering to look into the possiblities of going to law school, and have a few general questions... I've been working as a business analyst at a boutique (READ: f'in small)strategy consulting firm for about three years, after graduating w/ an engineering degree. 1)Besides an kick-ass LSAT score, what do I need to get into a top tier law school? 2)Would the fact that I want to work another 1-2 yrs (total 5 yrs) before applying hinder or help my chances? Would I be better off applying sooner? 3)Is where you work, or what you do, before applying to law school a major factor in getting in? If so, what sort of job/company would bolster my chances? (looking to change jobs currently) 4)Lastly, do I need to know anything about law before applying or attending? I know these probably seem like really silly questions, would any help would be appreciated. Gracias.
Message: The most important thing is your LSAT score. Since you've been out a few years, your undergrad GPA is probably less important than it would be if you had applied straight out of school. I don't think working a couple more years would hinder your chances, but realize that after law school, you have at least 7 years of being an associate before you are considered for partner (assuming you want to work for a firm). Waiting also may make getting back into the school mode harder than it would be now. Where you work can give you something interesting to say in your personal statement, but so long as it looks like a challenging and respectable job, I don't think it matters too much. Obviously, if you have the chance to work at McKinsey for a couple years, that would look impressive, but otherwise, I don't think it's a big deal. You do not need to know anything about the law before applying or attending. You do need to have a good reason why you want to go to law school (for your personal statement). And if you decide to go, you need to commit to it b/c it sucks a lot of the time and sometimes you'll want to quit (this is my experience anyway).
