In Reply To: Thanks for your reply. I agree that working 2-3 years would definitely help my chances of getting into a better MBA program. But if my work experience isn't for a company like Bain or McKinsey, I feel like I still wouldn't be able to get into a top MBA - what are your feelings? Also, still would love some advice on the process of getting into a school, then telling them I want to defer admission a year or two. Does that happen often? Thanks again for the feedback.
Message: I would definitely apply & then you can make a decision on deferring this spring when you know your job options. Most of the consulting firms are under a hiring freeze right now, so I'm not sure what the demand will be for undergrad recruits. (Check out the mgmt consulting board on Vault- a lot of offers from this past Sept have been retracted or deferred.) You may find a great job, but at least you would have a back-up plan (law school) if didn't find one. Schools will usually allow 1-2 year deferrment with no problem. I'm at HLS & took a few years off to do consulting before coming back to school. (BTW-I would estimate that about 50% of my class worked 1-3 yrs before starting.) I am also thinking about the joint degree. Quite a few of the people that I spoke with who are doing the joint degree at HBS decided to apply into it after they finished the first or second year of law school. (Most had work experience.) You may want to consider this option. Also, keep in mind that you could always go back for an Executive MBA later on down the line- and your firm might even pay for it. In short, consider all your options before making a decision and be flexible.
