I was under the impression that admissions officers look at "grade trends" and I thought this might save me a little from the crappy first semester I had. Is this not the case?

The higher ranked the school to which you are applying, then the more likely that numerous folks with your credentials will not be "automatic ins" but instead will be admitted based on discretionary factors. I have heard of "grade trends" as being one factor for some folks. But the first step, where your GPA/LSAT puts you in the "first cut" admission formula, may put you clearly out or largely in before you even get to this stuff. At the top schools, my rough understanding is that all factors of the app can have an importance, but the real fun is still in GPA/LSAT.
