Does anyone have any input on which language will be more useful to have in the near future, Cantonese or Japanese?

they're both very hard and you won't become competent in either in the "near future."
cantonese is not widely useful, essential only for speaking wtih the less educated in Hongkong. Hongkong's well educated speak English and China's (including Taiwan) speak Mandarin.
japanese is even harder. but it is the language of all of japan.
