In Reply To: I'm wondering if I should allow the offer of an out-of-state tuition waiver and all the courting Arizona State is doing over the phone to turn my head from a top 20 but regional school. I don't know where I want to live, but I know that I don't want to swim with the sharks in NYC. Informed opinions would be great. (leaning towards the top 20)
Message: I'm not going to join the chorus of ASU detractors. ASU is a solid, non-top law school. AZ's legal market is notoriously boom and bust, so I can't assess how your job chances will be in 3 years. That prompts my advice. But if you don't know where you want to live, and you know that Phoenix in particular and to a lesser extent Tuscon may have a great market or a very weak market when you get out, then it seems to me that whether you are talking AZ or some other place, your flexibility increases at a solid top 20 school. But if you choose to save the money and go to ASU, your life won't be over. You'll get a solid education, and you'll come out allright. My own experience is in two markets with wide legal economy swings--LA and Dallas. Boom and bust legal economies offer huger advantages as well as huger risks. But Phoenix is notorious for being either "everything's great" or "no jobs", and you need to protect yourself by going to law school someplace with a bit more status, so that you can have a bit more ability to switch regions. I'm not sure I'd go 100K into debt over the difference, ut I'd sure take on a solid mid five figure debt over the difference. My info on AZ,BTW, is hearsay, so treat it with the non-gospel lack of reverence you accord any internet posting. Best fortune with your choice!
