Taking the year off was extremely helpful to me and made all the difference in my application. I had applied to Ivy law schools and gotten waitlisted. I took a good look at my application and decided that while my extracurricular work was really strong, I could use a little work on my academics. So I took the chance to go for a year-long academic program abroad, which sharpened my focus and allowed me a chance to be first in my class. I got into the Ivies second time around.
Across the board, the people who had taken a year off were happier (and currently are happier) with their decision to go into law, largely because more went into it than the standard "Well, I'm not good at math, so I guess I'll go to law school." Plus you can do something (live abroad, teach English, study another subject, etc.) that you might never get to do again.
