In Reply To: I have been thinking about taking a one year deferral from law school. Has anyone also chosen to do this? What does everyone think of taking a year off prior to becoming a 1L? Thanks!
Message: I took 2 years off before going to law school, to get some money together to pay for it. But don't be fooled into thinking a law-related job is any benefit to you during this time, unless you want to do it. It will not get you any consideration in admissions, and employers hiring for the summer couldn't care less what your pre-law school experience was. I was actually a professional legal researcher, and never got more than a polite nod over it (and research is the primary activity of summer clerks). Anyway, do it if you need the time, but don't do it if you think it will be of some advantage to you beyond the break. Also, it's hard to get back in the swing of school after a break, and the first semester of law school is the make or break semester - you must get excellent grades for everything else (law review, summer jobs, etc.) to fall into place.
