I am a 3rd year law student at a second tier law school. My grades are very mediocre (2.1 GPA) and I have found my law school courses to be EXTREMELY boring (I feel like I haven't learned much) with the exception of two courses (Business Associations and Business Ethics). No matter how hard I study it just doesn't seem to be what the professor wants or I guess the grading system in law school leaves me at a serious disadvantage. I have not enjoyed my law experience whatsoever and was close to dropping out at the end of my first semester. I am 23 and I went to law school immediately after graduating from undergrad where my major was Psychology and Spanish and my GPA was 3.4. I feel like my law school experience has been anything but enriching and it has only left me with wanting to find something more interesting. Law school to me has been too theoretical and the way classes are taught (via the Socratic method) has been extremely difficult for me to adapt to. Before I went to law school I worked for a year at a pharmacy as a pharmacy technician. I then worked 7 months at Merrill Lynch in their Account Payable department as an accounting clerk and then finally worked at a mortgage company as a customer service representative. I currently have a small business on the side of offering people basic computer services (basic e-mail, basic Windows, etc). My question is: should I pursue studies in business? Specifically, should I seriously consider an MBA? People tell me that a law degree, while not a very satisfying career, is very prestigious. However, I would give up any kind of prestige for a type of hands on career where I can really enjoy my job and feel like I am really contributing to the productivity of a company. The thought of trying to "rainmake" or working 90+ hours at a firm is not very appealing (if I can even get a job with my crappy grades). If I do decide to go business school, will I have thrown away 3 years of legal education out the window? How can the two degrees be compatible in a work setting? Is a business degree considered to be a step down from a law degree? What about an LLM? Is it strictly for foreign lawyers? Anyone with any kind of comment or insight on my post is welcome to voice their opinion. I feel very unsure about my future at this point and don't know what to do. I'm thinking about talking to a career counselor because this has been bothering ever since the end of my first semester of law school. Thank you.
