I've been reading on this board and others that, for someone in audit, the best route to B-School is to lateral out after 2 years with the CPA, work for another 2 years to diversify experience, and then go for the MBA.
My question is, what are the common exit options for a big 4 auditor with 2 years experience and the CPA that would be competitive for a B-School application?
Also, is it difficult to lateral out after 2 years? Or, if one is diligent, networks with clients, and contacts headhunters, is it an easy move if one wants to do it? Thanks. |

You may have a problem. Most states require you to have five years of college (150 credit hours) or a masters just to become a CPA. In many states students are taking masters classes right out of undergrad to meet the 150 credit hour rules.
Putting that aside, you will not have any problems finding a job after one or two years at a Big 4. In the northeast we get headhunters leaving messages several times a week. Especially with the new Sarbanes rules, many companies are looking for CPAs. Networking with clients can help, but usually clients your clients will not take you, especially if they are a publically traded company because of independence violations.
Your only problem will be that with two years experience you will not be moving laterally into a manager position. You really need three years in a Big 4 so that you are a Senior for year before you leave to go to another company. Although your 2 years in, two years out plan should still get you into an MBA program.
