I interned for credit for the judge I work for now. I applied even though I knew my grades were not where they needed to be. Interning got my foot in the door and everyone in the office was pulling for me during the hiring process.

Interning (or externing) is always worthwhile if you want to clerk for a judge after law school. I externed for the district court judge I currently clerk for. But even more than working here, the externship helped get me interviews with other district and even circuit judges. Furthermore, I know that when we reviewed clerkship applications prior chambers experience was something my co-clerk and I considered.
Finally, even if you decide not to seek a clerkship an internship is more valuable than taking law school classes.
