Topic Name: Leaving as soon as you're hired
Message Name: Be careful of the Wrong Job

In Reply To: Consider the following hypothetical: X is a student who will graduate in several weeks with an advanced degree. X has an offer from company Y, whose business is in X's field of study, but for various reasons X does not consider Y to be an ideal career choice. X has recently received positive responses (however slow in coming) from more attractive employers. X would like to continue his job search in the next few months, but company Y demands a response. Should X accept the offer knowing that he will continue to look for other work? Possible advantages: X will have employment in a down economy, even if he is unable to find a better job. X will be developing skills that may be of value to other employers. Possible disadvantages: X questions the ethics of such a choice. For instance, if Company Y hired X, continued its employee search, and fired X to hire Z all within a short time period (i.e., one month), X would consider such behavior disreputable. X worries that if he engages in such behavior his reputation could suffer. X worries that wanting to leave Y after just being hired will negatively impact his chances when interviewing with other employers.
Message: Before you take a job that is not what you really want you need to determine if you have the discipline to continue your job search and the ability to leave the job once you hae found a better opportunity. If you leave a job after a short time you risk burning a bridge with this company. If you feel obligated to stay with the company with the less than desirable job, you risk missing opportunities. I would contact the companies who have indicated an interest and advise them you have an offer and ask if they have a real interest.
