"Pick 20 or so companies you want to work for and really research them"
That's what my B-School career placement office says (because no companies will recruit there).
That's fucking great. So what do I do once I send off those 20 resumes? Pick another 20?

This is the next gem of advice. "Find out who the hiring managers are and talk to them."
Don't you realize that they're just waiting to speak to someone who they don't know, who has a very elementary understanding of what the company does (no matter how good your research is), and who has nothing of immediate value to offer (unless of course, you happen to be from a direct competitor)?
Every contact I have complains how stretched their resources are, how problematic it is to get new resources onboard, in addition to solving the very real day-to-day problems of their business. Yet these people are expected to give you 5-10 minutes on the spot and perhaps a half hour informational interview in the comming weeks.
It seems pretty sad that with all the technology and our managerial enlightenment that getting in front of the right person is still a painful and serendipitous event.
