In Reply To: This country just doesn't have the same tradition as other countries when it comes to bargaining and haggling. Here, there's a palpable discomfort as soon as the subject of money is brought up. Salary negotiations are a case in point. We're so desperate or, even worse, uninformed about the job's parameters and our own worth that we give up the one chance we have as job seekers to really hit the mark. The perfect time to state a salary range or number is when you know you will receive an offer. Not before. And certainly not after you've indicated that, whether explicitly or implicitly, you'll take whatever offer is forwarded. This bears repeating: Don't give up a number until you know the job is yours. If you've done your part well, you'll already know your value and the value the company is willing to assign to you. Be sure not to be shortsighted as to only consider what your hourly wage will be. Consider the entire compensation package. Don't like the package? Negotiate, haggle, bargain to have it tailored to suit you. Until then, if asked what your salary expectations are, smile sagely and professionally and state "Market rates based on my experience and the value I'm bringing to your company."
Message: I just tried to give advice on the same subject, but yours is much better and really hits the target. Glad you're in the part of your cycle where you're giving sage advice -- is this the cynical or non-cynical part? Thanx from me and all job seekers.
