It's obvious that most of you have had bad experiences with HR at one time or another, which is too bad. More HR Professionals need to realize how important it is to treat employees AND candidates with respect. Not ALL of us are as evil! I am an HR Recruiter/Gerneralist for a biotech company and we regularly ask for "salary expectations" or an "acceptable salary range" when resumes are submitted, simply to gauge whether the candidate would be satisfied with the amount we have designated for that position. Any HR person who tells you there is no range for a position either doesn't know, or is not being honest. If I get a resume without salary expectations, I politely ask via email for them, or sometimes send the range and ask if it's acceptable. Frankly, I could care less what your salary history is, it's what you can bring to my company that is important. And for those of you that think HR should "know" what salaries are in our city for each positon, let me tell you it varies greatly between what the going rates may be and what some candidates expect. My company pays well and doesn't use the figure to lowball anyone. I know that behavior is the exception, I'm lucky to work for a forward thinking company. |

Why not post the salary range for the position in the job ad? Why is that is a secret? Why is the candidate expected to tell their salary, but the company can't tell the range for the position?
