In Reply To: I have heard anecdotally that many companies have stopped using recruiters entirely - they are considered too expensive and the companies instead are only using employee referals and job listings to find new hires. So using a recruiter could actually hurt you right now. Many recruitment companies have been hit hard by the economic downturn - many have laid off their staff or gotten out of IT or telecoms. So they are getting desperate as well. Remember, they work for the companies, not the candidates. In a market when there is a glut of candidates and not many jobs, don't expect a lot of help or consideration. They'll start kissing candidates butts when there is a shortage again.
Message: Not many years ago, there were no recruiters. These firms were born out of nowwhere to capitalize on the number of people looking for work. They are trying to sell something, make a buck, and maybe get someone a job, but I don't think getting someone a job is their prime concern. I've never had any luck with a recruiter. I've gotten jobs in the distant past by having a contact within a company who can "walk" your resume around and place it right in the middle of a hiring manager's desk or on his/her chair. Then that personal contact you have will really let you know what the scoop is. The use of the internet for reasons other than research purposes is almost fruitless.
