Actually, R2, funny that you should mention it, but I am looking for an entry-level account position -- account coordinator, assistant account executive, etc. I went through a portfolio program only to realize (after months and months of emotional turmoil!) that I just don't have "what it takes" to be a copywriter.
As for media, oh boy. That was the only class in my college career I ever got a C in, so media is definitely not my forte! It's unfortunate, because I see so many open media positions at agencies I would die to work at. I just know all the number crunching would seriously impair my sanity.
I've also tried the cold-calling thing as well, but I've made the mistake of asking for HR every time. I know I need to build up the courage to call up an account supervisor, but I'm afraid that I'm going to be a bother. So I find the easy way out and just ask for HR. Needless to say, most have been unhelpful.
So far I've interviewed for two admin jobs in my field and received an offer from one of them. During one of the interviews today, the VP was very frank -- "If you're looking for an AE track, this position is not for you..otherwise, we'd love to have you"...at least he was honest! Part of me feels like I need to take a position now so I can get those student loan payments back in check. Another part is saying "no! that golden opportunity is just around the corner!". And I've been busy interviewing, that's not the problem. I average about 2 or 3 a week, some informational, others for positions, but still nothing. And I've sent out my resume to about 60 places ranging from PR firms to magazines to advertising agencies to film studios. If it has anything to do with promotions or advertising, I've probably pounced on it.
Curious, R2, are you in the industry? You sure know a lot about it! And again, thanks. I apologize for the incessant rambling, but you can imagine the mental state I'm in....stressed!!

The worst thing to have on your resume is nothing. If the pay is good, you can pay your bills, learn more about the industry, and make contacts. The key is to give no indication of desiring an AE position, since the VP has ruled it out. If he's honest and would love to have you, that's great. Your golden opportunity will come eventually, perhaps even from this same VP, but only if you let him make the first move.
Actually, if you've been interviewing for a while and have not received any offers before, then this probably IS your golden opportunity. Holding out for your dream job can result in holding a bag full of nothing -- or you can get that dream job and find that it's really a nightmare.
Best of luck, and let us know what happens.
