In Reply To: Can any one offer some resources? I've been out of school for a year, I have a Bachelor's. I'm computer literate, reliable, dependable but I don't have experience. All I've been able to find is a job in retail. Retail! Somebody p lease help me find someplace to start, someplace to find companies willing to give someone a shot.
Message: I've read through these replies to "College Degree for a Year Still No Job". Let me tell you, that it's also extemely frustrating for me also. I graduated in 1974 with two very different degrees. I have held some very good jobs in my past. But, presently (within the last couple of years), the job market has turned political or something that I can't figure out, and everyone is having trouble. All kinds of moods set in, and feelings of despair and frustration are daily. I wonder, just what the hell is the problem. It's not our intelligence! We either need to have a big war, or a big long lasting space program. Lots of ideas and new jobs are created by both. Knowing someone on the inside (of a company) sure helps, and is probably the best way today to get in. The HR departments are virtually worthless, in fact, I coin the term, "anti-personnel department". I had no problem back in the 70s, and 80s landing and keeping jobs. You could even ask and threaten to leave if you didn't get a raise. I wouldn't dare do that these days. Of interesting note, back in the 70s and 80s, we basically did our searching via newspapers, and phone calls, and the post office, or personal visits. Today, with the internet and email, most companies prefer using the online method which I think is a joke. Companies used to send at least an acknowlegement to let one know that a resume was even received, it's very rare today. In fact, I feel lucky to even have a phone call returned. Think about this, if a HR department has some open requisitions for their company, and no one is getting hired, the HR department employees still have thier jobs, they could prolong their positions for a long time. I find that the hiring managers (so-called decision makers)actually do need people, but they can't get the HR people off the stick to do anything! Even after an interview! For those of you that are young and not married yet, keep it that way, until you have built up a sizable bank account for yourself. All was going pretty good for myself until I ended up in a bad marriage, all was taken away from me including house, $$, assets and belongings. So I'm back to ground zero in my life, just like as if I had just graduated from college, except now I'm 50.
