It's best for your career if you stay in the same geographic location until you are at a high enough level that companies will pay your relocation expenses.

My first job out of college involved a full company paid relocation from the other side of the atlantic. I know this does not apply to everyone, and was due to some specific experience I had, but the fact remains that if a company wants you enough they might pay to move you, regardless of your level.
Bear in mind of course that my relocation was paid a few years ago, before the downturn, so at this point in time Bob's advice might well be relevant!
