In Reply To: I'm in the process of changing jobs, but I've been thoroughly dissapointed by the usual resources, especially working "with" recruiters/headhunters. I've been thinking about my ideal job hunting resource. Everybody knows that networking is probably the best way to get you in the door and a good position. However, I'm relatively new to to the area I'm looking for jobs and I do not have the network of professionals that I can tap into and my current job has me working 14 hour days far away from home. For people like me, an ideal resource would be a virtual networking community where people like me would share information about who's hiring, who to contact, etc. I think vault.com had an idea a little bit like this, but it hasn't been realised, at all. Anybody know any sites or mailing lists like this? Or any other good resources (other than the usual suspectes, that is) to help in job hunting?
Message: You've got a big challenge ahead. 14 hour days, new to the area, disappointed with recruiters, all these could make anyone just give up in despair. However, you don't sound like a person that would do this. There is no single ideal, "magic" job hunting resource. You have to use them all, and, yes, this includes recruiters. Determine what has been disappointing about working with recruiters. Is it their lack of competence and professionalism, or the lack of jobs out there. Be sure to understand what you can control and influence (like selecting a new recruiter) and things you can't control (like the number of jobs out there.) Is it a misplaced set of expectations on your part? Networking is still your best bet. Find ways to learn and do networking. What field are you in? Check into whatever professional associations are available to you. Get on their mailing lists. Find a good job board, such as Vault, among the hundreds out there. Another is realrates.com. Understand their strongpoints and shortcomings. Check out their message boards. And get on their mailing list. Is there a local job placement center you can contact? Get on their mailing list. Everyone already knows the "usual suspects" for job hunting. Find your own and distinguish yourself from the rest.
