In Reply To: Hello everyone. I'm sending resumes out to companies and trying to avoid sending them into the HR black hole by sending them directly to the hiring manager. If the company's receptionist will not give out the name of the hiring manager, does anyone have any other ideas for getting the name? Also, is it better to call the hiring manager first or just send the resume in the mail? Thanks in advance.
Message: Approaches - If they have a web site, see if they give away their naming convention (john.doe@abc.com). If you are really lucky, the person you are looking for might even have their contact information and picture right there. For those of us who are not that lucky, you have to be creative. Use resources like Hoovers.com or Yahoo or the business resource section at the library to find a profile for the company and contact information. Some resources come close to giving you the name of the janitor's assistant. If you the contact's name and have their e-mail naming convention, give it a whirl. If it bounces back, try a different version (jim vs. james). If your patience runs out, call the general office number and ask their assistance in getting the decision maker's correct e-mail address. If you sense hesitation, asked them to put you through to their voicemail and them zero out to hopefully find someone else to help you. Minor Victories - I had to share this with everyone who has ever been railroaded by some HR wennie. I got a phone call last week from a company that I had applied for a position with months ago. I stopped pursuing the opportunity because the HR (term of your choice) said that I was no longer being considered for the job even though the position is still posted on their web site. The call was from the President of the small company. A couple of hours after the phone call, the same HR (term of your choice) calls me up all nice and asks if I am available to meet the President and VP by the end of the week. After the interview, I didn't get a chance to meet the HR person. If I take a job there, I think I will have a talk with my supervisor about that wonderful service this HR "professional" provides.
