In Reply To: Recruiters are generally useless for those with non-cookie cutter backgrounds. More often than not, their client is HR, not the person you'd be working for. Therefore, since HR is only interested in candidates whose backgrounds thay can understand because they have no clue about what any job except support functions really do, recruiters aim to please their clueless clients and only pitch cookie cutter candidates. Even if the recruiter pitches a non-cookie cutter candidate, if HR is the client, the resume will never see the light of day. Last year, a headhunter sent my resume for a position and didn't get a response. A few months latter I spoke with the president of the company who said I probably should have been hired for the position. Although they had just completed a hiring blitz because they had landed a couple of hundred million dollars in new business, he suggested I speak to HR about any openings he may not know about. I spoke with the HR person and she was more interested in my background when she thought I was a low level employee of a competitor, rather than waht I was, businness partners with them, reporting directly to the president. Although many recruiters have worked in non-hr functions in the industry they specialize in and thus have a clue, many are exhr people wanting to make more money opr have no experience in the industry they recruit for. These recruiters rely on buzz words even more than corporate HR types. That said, if you have a cookie cutteer background, recrutiers can be useful. My wife has landed most of her jobs including her current one through headhunters.
