In Reply To: I'm in my first job search in 10 years. I've found the rules have changed quite a bit and am not certain how to read some things. I'd appreciate a little feedback on this situation. I completed what was supposted to be a final round of interwiews last week. It's been eight business days since the interview and I haven't heard a thing. I'm not certain how to read this. It's possible I am the second choice and they are waiting to hear from candidate number one (at least I hope). However, I've found that firms seem a lot less professional in the hiring process than they used to be. Is it now common for firms to just not advise candidates if the decision has gone another way?
Message: Alot of it depends on where in the hierarchy you interviewed. Was it with the hiring manager or HR? How many people were being interviewed? 2 or three...or was it a 'cattlecall'? In the last few years, the HR professional has become much more indifferent in the hiring practice. At all cost, you need to stay away from that person, if you can. Hiring managers are more likely to get back to you with an answer, which could take weeks. I've found however, that if you send the hiring manager a brief note about your continued interest, that person will generally respond, even if their answer is vague. The rules have changed from 10 years ago. There's not as much professionalism in the process. Start up companies in particular tend to have a core competency of confusion, and in many cases, won't take the time to respond at all.
