In Reply To: I'm in my first job search in 10 years. I've found the rules have changed quite a bit and am not certain how to read some things. I'd appreciate a little feedback on this situation. I completed what was supposted to be a final round of interwiews last week. It's been eight business days since the interview and I haven't heard a thing. I'm not certain how to read this. It's possible I am the second choice and they are waiting to hear from candidate number one (at least I hope). However, I've found that firms seem a lot less professional in the hiring process than they used to be. Is it now common for firms to just not advise candidates if the decision has gone another way?
Message: I have one market research and consulting company that has been interested in hiring me for the past three months (at least, that's what they have told me). I had my final interview in January (after a phone interview in December). They did tell me that they had a couple of other candidates to interview at that time, and because of the position the company was in, that they would get back to me as soon as possible (they had implied it could be a month or more). Three weeks after the final interview, I received an e-mail stating that they believed I was a great match for the position and the company, but they still had yet to receive back any decisions on proposals they wrote. I've been keeping in contact with them every couple of weeks to let them know that I am still interested in the position, and at the point they know, to let me know. I know this sounds unusual, as most people would just forget about the position figuring the company was not professional. But, in all seriousness, they have been communicating with me saying that the potential clients have been dragging their feet on the decision-making process for the proposals. I don't see this as unprofessional for the company I interviewed with, but more unprofessional for the firms considering the proposals. And, yes, the firms do actually call back (or e-mail) if the answer is no. I've found that with some interviews, the companies have replied back to me within a few business days, and other times, I don't receive an answer for a couple of weeks or even a month. And the reasons are varied, but one possibility is that you may be the number two candidate (which has happened to me a few times already, and you may have the people who saw you arguing over who should be hired, thus causing the delays.) Hopefully, that helps...
