In Reply To: I'm in my first job search in 10 years. I've found the rules have changed quite a bit and am not certain how to read some things. I'd appreciate a little feedback on this situation. I completed what was supposted to be a final round of interwiews last week. It's been eight business days since the interview and I haven't heard a thing. I'm not certain how to read this. It's possible I am the second choice and they are waiting to hear from candidate number one (at least I hope). However, I've found that firms seem a lot less professional in the hiring process than they used to be. Is it now common for firms to just not advise candidates if the decision has gone another way?
Message: It has been nearly 5 years since my last job search, and I have noticed what you say - firms are not as professional in their hiring. I have been a hiring manager, and I firmly believe that if a candidate takes the time to actually come in for an interview, they deserve some feedback - whether it is yes or no. Many employers complain about the volume, but let's face it - the smart hiring managers first conduct phone interviews, and only bring those who they feel are qualified for face-to-face interviews. In my case, I am seeking a senior-level marketing position, and my guess is only a handful or less are invited in for interviews. I try to consider the situation. If I am speaking to someone who says he should be getting back to me in a week, I let a week pass, and then send a simple follow-up e-mail to reiterate my interest. For the most part, I have noted that the quicker the follow-up, the better a candidate they consider you to be. The Internet has created a speedier hiring process, and companies that drag their feet may miss out on the best people. I generally consider companies that cannot make up their minds to probably not be ideal employers anyway - imagine how long it would take to bring ideas to market!
