I'm in my first job search in 10 years. I've found the rules have changed quite a bit and am not certain how to read some things. I'd appreciate a little feedback on this situation.
I completed what was supposted to be a final round of interwiews last week. It's been eight business days since the interview and I haven't heard a thing.
I'm not certain how to read this. It's possible I am the second choice and they are waiting to hear from candidate number one (at least I hope). However, I've found that firms seem a lot less professional in the hiring process than they used to be.
Is it now common for firms to just not advise candidates if the decision has gone another way?

Don't do anything that WILL disqualify you such as firing off a hastily worded note. Instead, compose a professional sounding email inquiring about the position and your continued interest. Send this off to the manager you interviewed with.
The company may be bogged down in bureaucracy and is just not moving as fast as they could. But then again, 8 days is plenty of time for a decision. Even if you don't land the job, be sure to thank them for their time and consideration. Leave on a positive note. You never know how well the first candidate will do, or if they have other openings within the company, or if they're aware of other openings in other companies.
Look for a gain regardless of the outcome of this interview round. The most desired outcome, of course, is for you to land the job. Barring that, use it as a chance to network. In getting the interview, you beat out all those thousands of other applicants. Find out what they really liked and build on that. Find out what they didn't like, and improve on those traits.
