Any ideas on how one would go about looking for a job in another city where one has no contacts? What works best? Cold calling? |

Find as many recruiters as you can in your city that specializes in your field. Call each one and let them know you're on a job search. If possible, meet as many of them. Yeah, yeah, recruiters can be sleazy and cheesy but you're looking for a quick way to network.
Next, check out any local chapters of professional organizations you qualify for. Attend the next available meeting, or at least contact them and let them know you're on a job search.
Next, check out the local city or state sponsored employment agency. Get an idea of how the local job market is faring. Register for any free services you could use. Let them know you're on a job search.
Additionally, build your network ASAP. Talk to everyone regardless of whether or not they're in your industry. Let them know you're on a job search.
Furthermore, don't let your skills waste away. If you're not job-hunting, you're learning new skills or polishing your old ones to keep you marketable. While you're reading and studying, mention to the person next to you that you're on a job search.
As you network, don't ask for a job. Ask for information that might lead to a job. Know the difference between these statements. This will greatly affect how successful your networking will be.
Good luck.
