In Reply To: If you've been a cold calling cowboy its like ridng a bike. Have you been doing business development for vc and private equity lenders or working for companies seeking such. Have you done m & a work? Some boutique m and a firms hire cold callers on straight commission, but these companies generally work wit middling or small and pay straight commisssion. The same for companies that handle only small clients known as business brokers. Because of my strong rolodex, I've been offeref these type of jobs on straight commisssion. Unless your credentials are cookie cutter perfect MBA Wharton, Goldman Sachs etc, don't waste your time with HR of any investment banking firm. Cold call someone you'd be working for and pitch the suitability of your backround, former clients, specific industry knowledge and rolodex, and evern then its an uphill climb to get an investment banking job with a non-stellar pedigree.
Message: I'm not a sales guy, or a BD guy, or even someone who is a cold-calling cowboy. I'm more of a cookie-cutter banker type (top 20 school, bulge bracket, lots of M&A exp, and then worked for a start-up). What my problem is now is getting back in the groove of calling on PE/VCs to get into an analyst/associate position in a tight job market. There are so many ex-bankers with a pedigree like mine that I don't want to squander the rare opportunity to talk to someone who has a potential gig by sounding like a retard and getting flustered by act of cold-calling. I've done it in the past, and I know I can do it again... I'm just looking for some tips to help me quickly regain my game.
