I wouldn't hire someone who took 7 years to graduate from college... at least not if there was a good candiate who finished in 4 years. |

It took me eight years to get my college degree. Of course, I was a teenaged mother and wife, went to school, worked, and took care of my husband and child while I was doing that. I slept--routinely--four to five hours a night for years so I could get my homework done. AND I made the HONOR ROLL every single semester, and had a 4.0 average for five of those years. And I paid for all of my schooling, with the exception of a $900 grant the first year.
How does that make me "less desirable" than some person whose Mommy and Daddy paid for their education, supported them, and--most importantly--gave them NO experience with working for a living, or dealing with any adversity?
I hope you would rethink your attitude about that. You're missing some good candidates if you don't. Of course, I never had much success working for someone who didn't consider my tenacity, responsiblity, and work ethic important, either.
I have been successful in a professional career, and make nearly as much money as my brother with the MBA. And I teach at a state university too.
Really, keep an open mind. That formula hiring stuff is bad for your business.
