In Reply To: (continued from earlier post) 4. LUCK plays a big role - and LUCK CHANGES. Do not get depressed when you hear that your friends have gotten good jobs while you haven't yet. You just don't know what strings their families pulled - what IOUs their families had with hiring managers. In fact, your friends may not even realize that their jobs were given to them, not won by them. 5. SPANK THE INTERVIEW - know the TWO CRITICAL TIMES. Eventually, you will get interviews - think 3 to 6 interviews (different companies) to land one offer. Lots of books will give you good advice about interviews. I'll just add what most won't give you - the TWO CRITICAL TIMES. a) FIRST 10 MINUTES - make the personal chemistry count then. Interviewers spend the next 35-50 minutes confirming what they sensed in the first 10; b) LAST 30 SECONDS - you need an impactful ending: = ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS - not matter what you have heard or believe - ASK FOR THE JOB. This has two parts: (i) DON'T ASK, STATE YOUR WISH; (ii) ALWAYS FINISH WITH A QUESTION. Here's an example: "Mr./Ms. Smith, I really like this company and would love to work here. I believe that I could make a true contribution here. What do you think?" Here's what this does: it flatters them, it shows your enthusiasm, it shows your positive (not aggressive) self-confidence to ask for the position. Finally, in ending with a question, they are obliged to give you an answer - if not on the spot, then soon thereafter, often a positive one. WITHOUT THAT, many a candidate becomes a "maybe" and goes three months after the interview without a reply, till HR sends a pro forma, "We regret but ..." letter. 6. LEARN MORE. From your networking, you'll learn skills that are required. Many that you don't have you can teach yourself from books. Use your contacts and book reviews on Amazon.com to learn which books are best. All the Best to You!!
Message: I loved your posts! You nailed it. Very nicely done. You have provided excellent advice. Keep posting here - don't let the elements from the "dark side" take over - those nattering nabobs of negativity who want everyone to wallow in self-pity with them. I've got to go back to work Monday - I'm counting on you.
