In Reply To: hey, i just graduated from an Ivy in December without a job. I'm beginning to process of going through the alumni directory (searching my employer) to find fellow grads that work in companies I want to be a part of. While you can't call and ask for a job using such a network (usually an explicit rule of using such a directory), you can call and do an information gathering interview, learning about the company and the promotion process, and how to get your foot in the door. if you're lucky they'll offer to look at your resume or give you the name of someone to get in touch with that could offer you a job. good luck
Message: Who cares if it is! You're never going to make it if you are going to worry about these fuzzy points of etiquette. I mean, does it really say that somewhere. I've never seen it in my alumni directory. Who cares anyway. You don't have to ASK for a job, silly. Tell them you are LOOKING for a job. Invite them out to lunch. You go, girl!
