In Reply To: Experience.Experience and Experience. Boy, how naive was I when instead of looking for a job or internship I was trying to keep my grades up. 4.0 GPA does not count for shi.. these days. Finance degree is only usefull while hiking in the woods without toilette paper ( the paper on which the degree is printed must be scrunched before application). YOU are luckier if you have an accounting degree but without expirience ... yeah go hiking without toilette paper. I wish someone told me a year ago to start working as a garbage man for Salomon Smith Barney or on of the Big 2 ( Andersen is deep in whateveryouwannacallit)- at least I'd had a chance to meet or may be hand my resume to THAT Mysterious someone in HR. It seems almost useless to send the resumes because noone reads them ( they scan them on the PC and read only the ones that have the "key" words: experince, WORD, EXCEL, I KNOW YOUR MOTHER... ) Well - if somebody will read this memo and that someone is still in school - My advice to you - run and get an internship or a part-time job, work for free just work.
Message: Louriev: You are correct. Recently I spoke with an Senior HR person who said her company as well as other companies are "casting their nets" and pulling in many well educated, qualified, experienced people due to the downturn in business. She said with the amount of experienced out-of-work employees available today, employers prefer to hire people with experience who can "hit the ground running" without a lot of costly training. Your advice to someone still in school to get an internship, usually unpaid or low paid, is sound advice even if there is a thriving economy. Hindsight has 20/20 vision.
