In Reply To: I was laid off from a cash-poor software company in October and have been looking for work in product management/marketing or business development ever since. I had decent interest from companies early on in my search, but am finding a slow down in activity even though the job marketing is *supposed* to be looking up (I live in the DC Metro area). I'm afraid I may be getting tossed in the UGH pile because the gap in my employment is getting wider. So, the question: Do I address this in my covers letters? Could it prevent the "HR toss"? Any advice? Thanks!
Message: I was laid off in Dec. 2000. While between jobs, I was independantly consulting, going to classes, and doing things that I didn't have time to do before. Although you are now a "Professional Job Searcher," take advantage of this time off. It will show in your cover letter and interviews. My time off also gave me the opportunity to really go after the positions I wanted and I got a great job with a fantastic company in Feb. 2001. You say you are interested in product management/ marketing or business development. Isn't it an election year? Have you thought about working with any of the politicians or lobbying groups? Product management is perfect for campaign management. Marketing for selling a candidate. Business Development, because they are always looking for "New Clients" to donate money to their cause. They may not pay much if anything, but they could keep you busy and challenge you while you are looking for other work.
