In Reply To: I call the firm and say something like, "I am sending a package to the XXX manager (or whoever you are looking to talk to). Can you spell his correct name and address for me please?" THis pretty much always works (at least in getting the name of someone relevant). People don't ask too many questions (usually none), believe it or not. THen call him a few days later and tell him what you are looking for, and would he mind taking a look at your resume, and see if there is any reason that we should speak. I have never sent in a resume in response to a job ad. I guess I can't confirm it, but it seems that this is great for the comapny, but not for the candidate. The odds seem stacked against the applicant. Here is one that I tried that probably worked better before Sept 11th and still depends on where you live: Just show up to the firm and ask for an interview. People get very surprised when you just walk in, it does not happen often. I actually received several financial job offers like this after college (not in NYC obviously). Anyway, it's just a thought. If I were applying for something like McDonald's, this was the only thing that I would do. If you are trying to interview for a executive level position, it will probably not work as well. I bet it would work very well for someone who was trying to interview with small legal firms or people just out of college. What worked for you?
Message: Why didn't I think of that? I guess different things work for different people in different circumstances. I've networked professionally to find jobs, but never would have imagined that your methods would have worked (except, as you say, at places like McDonald's). As for your small legal firms, how likely would they be to have an opening at any given time? And how many of these walk-ins did it take before you actually got hired?
