I would never ever have been employed if I followed the rules. Sending my resume to HR has only resulted in receiving form rejection letters without any other contact. Calling HR although ocassionally getting me an interview before the form rejection letter has generally been a waste of time as well.
Calling the person I'd be working for or above generally has been the only way that I have successfully gained employment since graduating from college nearly 18 years ago (I will hit the big four oh in April). These people get a glimpse of my industry knowledge and creativity and based on the fact that I'm calling, my initiative.
Prior to the internet I used to get the names of the people I'd contact from directories, annual reports, articles and by simply asking for the vp of marketing or whatever job title person I needed to speak with had. Now the internet has made this process easier.
I remember one time I saw an ad for a job that ran in the NY Times, Ad Week and Ad Age simultaneously. I called up and the screener told me send my resume and I didn't. The ad was still running two months latter and I called again. I was told again by the screener to send my resume. I told the screener, that since you're still running the ad, that your obviously havig problems finding a suitable candidate. She eventually put me through to the presidnent of the company and was hired.
Fresh Meadows, I would like to offer you a challange, the same challange that I've been offering HR professionals for several months in this forum.
Please tell me what industry you worked in (you're retired if I'm not mistaken)and I'll come up with a few hypothetical candidates for a couple of hypothetical jobs. I would like to see who'd you hire.

I have experience in project planning, financing, design, construction, and contract issues. And yes, I'm now retired and much happier than ever before.
Your story about the ad that was still running 2 months later shows how disfunctional many organizations have become. But I wonder.... could you have been employed 2 months sooner if you'd submitted your resume in the first place?
