Imagine my surprise today when I drove 50 miles to Job Finders International in Santa Ana CA for what I thought was an interview with a Recruiter only to discover that they are a "Marketing" firm that expects the Candidate to pay them a fee up front for "Career Counseling". Anybody have any experience with these Marketing firms disguising themselves as Recruiters? |

What amazes me is people keep falling for these scams! I can only guess that we've reached such a depressed and desperate stage in our job search that we'll believe anything and everything with the hope that this recruiter/job board/web site will be "The One" that will get us hired. Next thing we'll be doing is answering "work at home and earn $50K/month" ads!
I'm sure there are legit counseling outfits out there that provide a legit service. But unless you're so new to a job search, chances are you've been in this situation before and are already experienced with what the councelors will tell you. They'll remind you of the univeral truths of a job search you already know: it will be tough, it will take persistence, you will need a kick-butt resume, you will need to network, blah, blah. You shouldn't have to pay $$$ for this. Beware of any service that offers to take your money for services or performance you can do for yourself or can't possibly measure due to their general disclaimers.
One thing counselors can do is hold you accountable for your actions. You can pay them to nag you to put down the remote, get off the couch, stop feeling sorry for yourself, and go do that job search thing! But then again, isn't that what significant others, parents, and close friends are for?
