I have just graduated from a community college an associates degess in Computer Programming and an AAS in Information Systems. My problem is that I don't know what kind of job to apply for. I am a middle age person changing careers now and have always loved computers, so I decided to get an education in the computer industry. I just don't know what kinds of jobs to apply for because of all my skills. I have beginning skills in networking, programming, Web page building, databases, Quickbooks, excel, word, powerpoint, publishing, repaiting computers and many other computer skills. When I look on the job sites though, I get confussed about what jobs that I would qualify for. Does anyone have any suggestions? |

You'll have a tough time competing in today's market overpopulated with laid-off, experienced workers if all you have to offer are "beginning skills." Companies expect you to hit the ground running and not have to worry about getting you up to speed.
Have you applied your newfound skills? Have you created a web site, installed a router, maintained a network? You'll need to show that you not only have the book learning but actual hands-on, practical experience at solving real life problems found in real life companies.
You've made a good start but you need to focus a bit. You're like me in that I enjoy computers, the fascinating technology behind them, learning what makes them tick, using them in diverse and creative ways. Start your research with a high level, general interest sites. From there, you'll most likely get ideas to research the more computer industry or technology specific sites. You might even consider registering with some recruiters after you've bolstered your resume with additional and practical experience.
Good luck to you. And hang in there!
