In Reply To: I wouldn't give the party line to anyone. You want specific examples? I had someone call to verify job title and employment dates for a former employee on Tuesday. The person lied about both, told the person they had supervisory experience at this company and had direct reports, and told them a salary that was 10K more than they were making here. Go ahead, lie on your resumes, your applications, and any other form that you sign. If you read any of the postings I said that most HR people have multiple (generalist responsibilities) and at my company we actually do quite a bit of outsourcing. I get around 200 emailed resumes a day, in addition to 20-40 calls after a posting has gone up. Did I mention that I also do training, budget planning, interviewing, problem solving, among many other things? By the way, I'm Ms. Busy.... :) At my mom's company (FedEx) a pilot lied on his application and when was found out 7 years later, he lost his job. People don't understand that with lies, you will always slip up. What happens when you falsify information is you are handing over the right to be terminated at will at any time by your employer with no questions asked. While we can continue to blame everyone for our continued disappointments, but if you want to lie on your application. Go ahead, do so. Maybe it will get you in the door and get you a lucrative job and a satisfying career. ~Just a note regarding these flaming posts, we are all human and genuine respect and dignity are valued even in the internet world. While this is a great mode of communication, sometimes we forget that we are talking to people, not computers.~
Message: While it may be true that lying on your resumes and past accomplishments will get you fired, it seems to be more effective these days than being truthful about graduating with a hard major in a less than forgiving job market. I can actually understand why someone would go to such links as these in order to even find a DECENT job, let alone one that fits their college degree. In the internet world, we can cut and paste resumes all day long, we are still looked upon as numbers and I believe a good number of employers are losing good prospects simply because our credentials don't fit the norm. It's too bad these "gatekeepers" don't have the chance of actually sitting across the table from a living and breathing human being in the flesh-what a concept! They might find a good employee-capable of doing the job and then some, they might even find a friend. So while it is nice to read that you robots in HR are actually humans with feelings (I haven't met one yet), then maybe you can do your job and call us back regarding the jobs in your company for which we qualify, instead of sitting on your high horse thinking you have the upper hand.
